Urban Homeworks
What’s it like to volunteer at Urban Homeworks?
This past Saturday I did something I have never done before. I was part of a group from Faith that helped with an Urban Homeworks project at a home in south Minneapolis. We met at the church parking lot at 8:00am to figure out carpooling since some would stay until 4:00pm, while others needed to leave at various times. An email was sent out that week with the address of where we would be working so if we couldn’t meet at the church we could meet at the site at a later time. There were 9 adults, 3 young adults and 3 youth (age 16 and older) – 5 ladies and 10 guys. It was the first time for 10 of us. Some of the veterans brought along their personal tools and construction items but everything we needed was on hand at the site. I brought along a water bottle and gloves. (I recommend bringing a lunch or a snack if you plan to stay the whole day.) We helped get a 3 bedroom home ready for its new owners. There was something for everyone – painting, cleaning, replacing mini blinds, refinishing floors, repairing sheetrock, and hanging cabinets. That was for this particular project. From what I understand each project is different. Instruction was provided as needed. I left about mid day so I didn’t see the end result but it was impressive to see the fruits of all our labor in a short amount of time. Will I do it again? I plan to. Faith Church is scheduled to help the second Saturday of even months. Todd Bjerke is our fearless leader. He can give you specifics about Urban Homeworks if additional information is needed.
