What are we doing Saturday, June 8?

“Every time I have ever worked with the crew at Urban Homeworks I have been impressed by them. They are a top-notch organization, and I feel quite honored to be able to even have a small part in what they are doing for the entire community on behalf of Jesus Christ. Some months we have many volunteers from Faith Church for our Urban Homeworks service and other months the sign-ups are light. When you make plans for Saturday, June 8, think about offering a few hours of your time to advance the kingdom. You won’t be sorry.

Please SPREAD THE WORD among others you know who may be able to volunteer June 8. Call Sue Studenski or meet at Faith at 8:00 Saturday morning to figure out carpooling. The workday ends at 4:00 pm. If you prefer to start a little later or need to leave early, that would be fine. Contact Sue for the exact address where we will be working.

What is Urban Homeworks?

Faith Church supports Urban Homeworks on the second Saturday of every other month.  Mark your calendars to join us the second Saturday in: February, April, June, August, October, December.  Sign up sheet is available in the Information Hallway. Everyone age 16 and older is invited to participate—friends and neighbors are welcome! Please contact Sue Studenski if you have questions or would like more information.

Urban Homeworks
Urban Homeworks is a Christian housing organization that has rehabilitated and constructed scattered, small, multi-unit and single-family housing in the Twin Cities since 1995. The combination of dignified housing, volunteer mobilization, construction training for community members and a passionate group of young professionals in the community has created a powerful model of neighborhood stabilization and richness. This is the local Beyond Us project that Faith Church chosen for special emphasis and support.

Saturday I did something I have never done before. I was part of a group from Faith that helped with an Urban Homeworks project at a home in south Minneapolis. We met at the church parking lot at 8:00am to figure out carpooling since some would stay until 4:00pm, while others needed to leave at various times. An email was sent out that week with the address of where we would be working so if we couldn’t meet at the church we could meet at the site at a later time. There were 9 adults, 3 young adults and 3 youth (age 16 and older) – 5 ladies and 10 guys. It was the first time for 10 of us. Some of the veterans brought along their personal tools and construction items but everything we needed was on hand at the site. I brought along a water bottle and gloves. (I recommend bringing a lunch or a snack if you plan to stay the whole day.) We helped get a 3 bedroom home ready for its new owners. There was something for everyone – painting, cleaning, replacing mini blinds, refinishing floors, repairing sheetrock, and hanging cabinets. That was for this particular project. From what I understand each project is different. Instruction was provided as needed. I left about mid day so I didn’t see the end result but it was impressive to see the fruits of all our labor in a short amount of time. Will I do it again? I plan to. Faith Church is scheduled to help the second Saturday of even months.
